VIDEO: Aldergrove schools host annual winter markets

Coghlan and Peterson Road Elementary schools held its craft fairs on Nov. 16

Eight-year-old Natalia was just one of the students with their own tables selling homemade crafts at Coghlan Elementary's annual winter craft fair.

Although her sister crocheted the fuzzy bees and snowmen, Natalia was the entrepreneur of the family.

Michelle DeRossi, president of the parent advisory council, admitted the craft fair almost didn't happen this year.

"But some former organizers stepped in and we got a really awesome team together to put together a fantastic event," she told The Star.

"Our craft fair is a long standing tradition."

In addition to the half dozen student tables, there were 30 vendors and a bake sale – which sold home baked treats and bread by parents.

"All our parents come together and make some of the most 91Ô´´enal baking. There's fresh bread, some beautiful bakery style cupcakes," DeRossi said.

She commended the parents that took part in the bake sale, given Coghlan is a small school with only about 230 kids, which she estimated totals to 150 families.

DeRossi herself brought in homemade marsh mellows to go with the hot chocolate, which was sold by donation in the lobby.

She learned from her mom growing up.

"They're easy they just take time. It's just sugar and corn syrup, and you melt it and mix it. I use beef gelatin so it's like a superfood, health product," she shared.

On the same day, Saturday, Nov. 16, Peterson Road Elementary held its own winter market to raise funds for school supplies and playground upkeep.

It was the school's sixth year holding a winter market, and its PAC president Shannon Twist said it's quite popular, likely due to the evening Mocktail sipping shop they hold.

"We opened up Friday night for the mocktail sipping shop, and it helps vendors set up as well," she said, adding that the fair had a steady stream of shoppers within the first hour.

Twist noted that donations were also being accepted by the PAC for 91Ô´´ and Aldergrove food banks. Even a vendor was donating their proceeds to the school meal programs.
