CLOVERDALE 鈥� Emergency responders had to remove the roof of a vehicle and use the Jaws of Life to rescue three people after a serious crash in Cloverdale on Wednesday night (May 3).
One vehicle was involved in two separate crashes, police said.
A caller told police a black Cadillac had been involved in a collision around 9 p.m. with a vehicle near 64th Avenue and 168th Street, but kept going.
Police say the Cadillac then hit the back of a grey Honda Prelude on 64th Avenue just west of 176th Street (Highway 15), pushing the vehicle into the Shell gas station.
The Honda then hit the fuel pump, according to police.
Three people inside the Honda were trapped, and though they were freed by members of Surrey Fire Department, all were hurt. The man driving that vehicle was taken to hospital in critical condition. On Friday, the Surrey RCMP confirmed that the 17-year-old had died from his injuries.
A woman in the vehicle was taken to hospital in serious condition, and a second man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Allison Keating heard the crash.
鈥淚t was absolutely horrific,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was there with my daughter, coming home from Splitz gymnastics about 30 to 45 seconds after it happened. We heard the impact but didn鈥檛 see it.
鈥淪o terrifying,鈥� added Keating. 鈥淚鈥檓 praying for everyone who was injured.鈥�
Police say the woman driving the Cadillac was a 22-year-old Surrey resident, who was detained at the scene of the second crash. Alcohol, drugs and speed have not been ruled out, according to Surrey RCMP.
