Dear Editor,
I am excited about Angel arriving to attend TWU from Wellspring Academy Rwanda. [A, 91Ô´´ Advance, Aug. 17, 2017]
My son Ben Farrant (BSc TWU 2002) was on the board of Wellspring and helped the founders Jeff Komant and Richard Taylor, his close friends. He was on site in Rwanda for five months in 2005 – pouring foundations and setting up all the computer systems and assisting in the documentary Hope Rises, about the school and rebuilding a nation.
Trangically, he was killed instantly July 6, 2006, by a dangerous driver while bicycling in 91Ô´´ on 200th Street and 83rd Avenue. The driver was found guilty and given a jail sentence.
Ben had poured himself out for Wellspring school and loved it. Jeff Komant and Richard Taylor flew all the way from Rwanda for his funeral at Cedar Grove in Maple Ridge, where he was a well-loved leader.
His friends started a Ben Farrant Memorial cycleathon ride that raised about $40,000 every year for the school. It has since become their Lake2lake cycleathon fundraiser in Vernon. His sister, brother-in-law and father and me as his mom have all been a part of it, as well as so many of his beautiful TWU friends.
He would be so proud of Angel as the fruit of his life, and I am so proud of my beloved son, Ben who made his life count!
My heart swelled up with pride. Thanks for the great story.
