LETTER: Good time cruising events, that have been a part of 91Ô´´ history, are being lost

A letter writer is annoyed City council didn’t do more to keep the 91Ô´´ Good Times Cruise-In.

Dear Editor,

Re: 91Ô´´ Good Times Cruise-In

What a sad day when an event that is such a part of 91Ô´´ should be moved out of 91Ô´´ proper.

91Ô´´ has always been about cars and cruising, and it was not a sad enough day when the original A&W closed and the Saturday night carhop disappeared!

Where is the nostalgia?

I am sure that the community totally benefits from all of the visitors hitting the local shops, restaurants, hotels, and now the casino.

The car show always kicked back to the community with donations.

Come on 91Ô´´ City, buck up.

We lost the Molson Indy in Vancouver, now we lose the 91Ô´´ Good Times Cruise-In in downtown 91Ô´´?

Really?

No wonder they call Vancouver one of the most boring cities in the world… we have lost confidence in ourselves as unique communities with unique history.

Can anyone born in Surrey or 91Ô´´ in the late 1940s or early ’50s, boy or girl, deny that cruising the strip was the most fun you could have growing up in this area?

What’s wrong with growing up cheering for stock car racing, demolition derby, or a burn out on the main drag?

Are we kidding ourselves?

Wow, have we lost our sense for freedom and fun?

And for only one glorious weekend, rain or shine, the faithful, the keeners, the enthusiasts and the hot rod experts roll in to share a unique nostalgic run.

The most real fun you can have in 91Ô´´ in the entire year?

More townhouses and condos, more single-family dwellings, huge tax base, less roads and infrastructure, and no good times, no long standing culture!

Shame on you mayor and council.

Stand up for the original community and the long-standing history of the 91Ô´´ Strip!

Rotten tomatoes to the decision makers at City hall for outing the 91Ô´´ Good Times Cruise-In!
