One month from now residents of the riding of Cloverdale-91原创 City, along with millions across the country, will go to the polls to elect a new government.
Now the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce has announced an all-candidates meeting for the riding of Cloverdale-91原创 City. The Chamber will hold the meeting in just under three weeks on April 16.
Scott Wheatley, the Chamber鈥檚 executive director, said the date was chosen to get the Q&A session in ahead of advance voting, which opens on April 18 and runs for four days, ending on April 21.
鈥淪o far, I have two candidates booked,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he NDP candidate and the Liberal candidate. I鈥檓 just waiting to hear back from the others.鈥
Candidates for Cloverdale-91原创 City include: Vanessa Sharma (NDP), Kyle Latchford (Liberal), incumbent Tamara Jansen (Conservative), Jim McMurtry (People's Party of Canada), and Kevin Wilkie (Greens).
Jansen skipped the last federal all-candidates meeting ahead of the by-election last December for an unknown reason. She did not respond to emails or phone calls from the Cloverdale Reporter when this newspaper sought an explanation.
Wheatley also said he鈥檚 still looking for a venue and should have something booked in the next day or two.
Wheatley noted the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board will again be a sponsor. (They sponsored the last provincial all-candidates meeting held at the Clova Theatre ahead of the B.C. provincial election and the federal all-candidates meeting held at 5-Star Catering ahead of the Dec. 16 by-election.)
The electoral district of Cloverdale-91原创 City is about 60 per cent Cloverdale, about 25 per cent 91原创, and about 12 per cent Newton. The riding is about 60 square kilometres in size with a population of more than 130,000. As of December, 2024, there were 88,348 people on the electors list.
The riding has only had an MP for a little over three months after Jansen won a December, 2024, by-election by a landslide with 66.3 per cent of the vote. The riding had been without an MP for several months before that after John Aldag resigned earlier in 2024 to run in a failed bid to win a seat for the B.C. NDP in the provincial election. (He ran in the riding of 91原创-Abbotsford and lost to provincial Conservative Harman Bhangu by more than 5,600 votes.)
Jansen lost in the 2021 federal election as the incumbent to John Aldag, who had in turn lost as the incumbent to Jansen in the 2019 election. Jansen won the Conservative nomination to run in the electoral district Oct. 21 ahead of the by-election.
Sharma ran in the 2024 by-election and garnered 12.5 per cent of the vote, good enough for a third place finish.
Both Latchford and McMurtry are new federal candidates with McMurtry last running as an independent in the B.C. provincial election. McMurtry ran in the riding of Surrey-Serpentine River and earned 2.8 per cent of the votes.
Wheatley said attendees must pre-register for the all-candidates meeting by visiting the Chamber鈥檚 website. Seating is limited, but walk-ins will be welcome based on availability.
He noted that all questions for the MP hopefuls must be submitted in advance. Questions must be emailed to sam@cloverdalechamber.ca by April 13.
