91原创 talent shines in Theatre Under the Stars summer season

Local performers take part in musicals underway in Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl

Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) is captivating audiences this summer with its highly anticipated 2024 shows, which started July 5 and run to Aug. 24 at Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl. This year's lineup includes the iconic musicals "CATS" and "School of Rock," and both shows feature a 91原创 actor.

Tia Gunhold brings her extensive dance background to her role as Victoria in "CATS."

Gunhold鈥檚 journey to the TUTS stage is rooted in her early dance training at Young at Arts Dance Academy and 91原创 Fine Arts School.

"I grew up dancing in a range of styles, but I gravitated towards jazz, musical theatre, lyrical, and contemporary," Gunhold told the 91原创 Advance Times.

Despite initially auditioning for a chorus role, her talent earned her a callback for Victoria, a featured dance role.

"Playing Victoria has been an incredible process. I see parts of myself in her, and the casting feels very purposeful," she added.

"CATS," a classic in musical theatre, is renowned for its demanding choreography and iconic music.

The TUTS production, directed by Ashley Wright, choreographed by Julie Murphy, and with music direction by Sean Bayntun, brings a fresh perspective to the stage with a contemporary, Vancouver-inspired urban alley setting and stylized costumes.

Gunhold's excitement was palpable as she described her involvement in this show.

"It feels surreal to be part of CATS. The dancing and choreography are technically flawless, and it's an honour to play Victoria,鈥 she said.

Meanwhile, Liam Nimmo, also from 91原创, adds depth to "School of Rock" with his portrayal of Mr. Spencer, Mr. Noble, and various ensemble roles.

Nimmo鈥檚 early experiences in 91原创 youth theatre ignited his love of live performance.

"Being part of youth theatre productions in 91原创 helped develop my love for live theatre," Nimmo shared. "When I saw that TUTS was doing two shows by Andrew Lloyd Webber, I knew I had to audition.鈥

School of Rock, based on the popular 2003 film starring Jack Black, tells the story of Dewey Finn, a wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious private school.

Directed by Tracey Power, choreographed by Matthew Rossoff, and with music direction by Eliza De Castro, the production features a talented ensemble of youth musicians from School of Rock Vancouver.

"Working with Tracey, Matthew, and Eliza has been a joy. They push us to achieve our best and are brilliant at what they do," Nimmo remarked.

Gunhold described typical rehearsals as a blend of group warm-ups, choreography, staging, and music sessions.

"We rehearsed four to five days a week, which was quite tiring given that the cast all have day jobs," she explained.

Nimmo highlighted the challenges and excitement of working with the young musicians in "School of Rock."

"The child performers in our show are incredible. They play instruments, sing, and dance flawlessly. I often sit in the wings just to watch them perform," he noted.

Stanley Park's Malkin Bowl adds a unique dimension to these productions. Gunhold mentioned the interesting process of tech rehearsals in daylight, which contrasts with the nighttime setting of "CATS."

"Working at the Malkin Bowl has been inspiring because of its long history as an outdoor theatre in Vancouver," she said. Nimmo noted that the outdoor venue enhances the concert-like atmosphere of "School of Rock," making it feel like a real rock concert.

Both actors hope audiences will appreciate the different aspects of each show and the hard work that has gone into the productions.

"I'm excited for people to see these shows because they are both unique and iconic," Nimmo said.

"I feel honoured to share the stage with this talented cast and can't wait for these next couple of months,鈥 Gunhold added, just ahead of last week's start.
