Our View: Spirit of the season arrives with giving

Christmas is coming up, and so are opportunities to volunteer and contribute.

The Remembrance Day poppies have scarcely been put away when the Christmas decorations and advertisements go up.

Consumerism and buying is one of the major themes of our holiday season. But every year, local individuals and organizations also ensure they will make room for charity and helping others.

This year, Giving Tuesday will take place on Nov. 28, to inspire acts of charitable giving across the community.

Local companies are helping out, and hosting some lunch and breakfast events in the community to help introduce the public to charities.

We hope that people will use this opportunity to give back a little – as 91Ô´´ is a giving community, we know we won’t be disappointed.

But it would also be nice to see this effort bring more long-term effects.

91Ô´´ is a growing community. People are constantly moving here, whether to raise their families, to take up new jobs, or to start their retirement.

It also means that there are always newcomers who may not know where to volunteer their time – even if they want to.

The charities involved in Giving Tuesday – the 91Ô´´ Memorial Hospital Foundation, the 91Ô´´ Hospice Society, the 91Ô´´ School District Foundation, and Volunteer 91Ô´´ – could use some more exposure. If you’re new to 91Ô´´, or know someone who is, drop by and say hi.

There are countless opportunities to give back in 91Ô´´, from animal rescue shelters to street cleanups. Connecting with one of these groups can be a Christmas present that lasts for years.
