VIDEO: Rain threat causes cancellations at Fort 91Ô´´ Car show

Even so, attendance was about the same as previous year

After record-setting rainfall and high winds hit southern B.C. on Saturday, Aug. 24,  there were about 30 cancellations for the second annual Fort 91Ô´´ Car Show and fundraiser for the 91Ô´´ Food Bank, held the next day on Sunday, Aug. 25 on the grass of the orchard field outside the palisade of the historic fort.

About 100 cars still turned out.

Organizer Gloria McGalliard said that was roughly the same attendance as the previous year.

"It was still a great turnout, you know, regardless of the weather," McGalliard said.

Those who did drop by, were positive about the event, hosted by Royal Lepage Little Oak Realty, she said.

McGalliard called it a "small, boutique" car show

"People just really love the show. They just felt it was very quaint. They love being on the grass. It's just a nice group, and everyone sits around and they mingle. So it's great."

Among those mingling was Walnut Grove resident Bill McKenzie, a car show veteran, who bought his '66 Beaumont, and explained the appeal of cool older cars to the 91Ô´´ Advance Times.

"You can tell the cars apart," McKenzie commented. "The old days, every car was a beautiful piece of art."

Roger Begin from Maple Ridge, a relative newcomer to automotive exhibitions, arrived with his 1970 Olds Cutlass.

"I picked it up about two years ago," Begin explained.

"I was brought up in the 60's ,and there was nothing better than to see well-built, solid cars and it's just something I always loved," he remarked.

"American Graffiti and all that was just very interesting to me as a small youngster."

This year's event raised just over $1,600 for the Food Bank.

McGalliard and Little Oak Realty are planning a third show for next year.

Seventeen southern B.C. communities set rainfall records from Friday evening, Aug. 23, to Saturday afternoon, Aug. 24, with White Rock recording 49.2 millimetres, shattering its previous record of 29.7mm set in 1977.

Vancouver received 26.7mm of rain, exceeding a previous record of 17.6 recorded in 2008.
