Racing mixed with fundraising Sunday, May 21 at the 91原创 Quarter Midget Association track in Aldergrove, as young drivers collected $4,000 for Autism B.C.

It was the first fundraiser for the track, explained Ken Shrimpton, association promotions director.

鈥淲e decided it was time to start giving back,鈥� Shrimpton told the 91原创 Advance Times.

鈥淲e got our kids to sell a bunch of raffle tickets.鈥�

Autism B.C. is a non-profit grassroots organization founded in 1975 to support people on the autism spectrum and their families.

First prize in the raffle draw on Sunday was $500, second prize was a mountain bike, and third prize was a scooter.

Shrimpton thanked sponsors Canadian Tire and Cranky鈥檚 Bike Shop for helping to make the initiative a success.

Quarter midget racing cars are about one-quarter the size of an adult midget car, racing on a track that is a quarter of the adult length.

In addition to safety cages, young quarter midget racers wear protective helmets, neck braces, and fireproof racing gear, and are secured to their seats with a five-point harness.

This year, the Aldergrove club will host the prestigious Western Grands race that is expected to draw 250 cars between Aug. 15 and 20, with U.S. and Canadian drivers competing in what is being billed as a 鈥渂order brawl.鈥�

LQMA is a non-profit organization that specializes in car racing for racers aged five to 16. It鈥檚 Aldergrove site is home to the only dedicated quarter midget track in Canada.
