91原创鈥檚 Seniors of the Year enjoyed VIP treatment when they arrived for a special presentation at the 91原创 Seniors Resource & Recreation Centre on Thursday morning, June 1.
Albert Langla and Sandra Reams, longtime volunteers in the community, arrived in a Pontiac Vibe, due to the usual classic car transporting previous recipients not being available that day.
But, it was noted the transportation was fitting because the pair brings a great vibe to all the people they encounter on a daily basis.
Both Langla, 86, and Reams, 77, have lived in 91原创 for 20 years and over those two decades they鈥檝e filled their days with countless hours of volunteer work.
Reams volunteers with the 91原创 Environmental Partners Society and with the 91原创 Gogos, who support millions of grandmothers in Africa who are caring for a generation of orphans from AIDS.
Langla is a familiar face at the centre, where he is a dependable and tireless volunteer in a number of capacities.
As Seniors of the Year, the two will be asked to attend numerous community events and parades in 91原创.
Reams is looking forward to the obligations that lie ahead because they are right in her wheelhouse.
鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to this year,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 like to go out and about and chit-chat.鈥
She then quipped, 鈥淚鈥檓 going home to practise my wave.鈥
Langla was floored by the honour. 鈥淚 thank everyone for what they鈥檝e done for me. I will carry on as Albert. I will not change.鈥
Jim McGregor, vice chair of the 91原创 Seniors Resource Society鈥檚 board of directors, thanked Langla, Reams, and all the volunteers at the 91原创 seniors centre for their tireless volunteerism.
鈥淲hen I come into this room, I see 100 people who would qualify for Seniors of the Year,鈥 McGregor said. 鈥淭here are so many people who continue to give back to the community.鈥
During the ceremony, Langla and Reams received gift baskets from the Save-On-Foods location on Fraser Highway and together cut a chocolate 鈥楽eniors of the Year鈥 cake.
