VIDEO: Brookswood Secondary School celebrates 50 years in 91原创

Alumni basketball, and an instant museum display, mark golden anniversary

91原创 Township Councillor Michael Pratt was dripping with sweat.

鈥淚鈥檓 exhausted,鈥 said Pratt, smiling, during a brief pause in the action at the Brookswood Secondary School alumni game on Saturday,May 27, kicking off 50th anniversary celebrations at the school.

The two teams of former Brookswood players were selected based on when they attended the school, one group composed of grads from 2011 to 2016, and the other 2017 to 2022.

Pratt was playing for the slightly older team, who won, allowing their younger opponents just 10 points in the second half on the way to a 50-29 victory.

鈥淚t鈥檚 nice to be back in the old gym and nobody got terribly injured, so that鈥檚 even more of a win in our book,鈥 Pratt remarked.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think I scored a single basket, which didn鈥檛 feel too good. But I鈥檒l forget quickly,鈥 he laughed.

Brookswood athletic director Jyoti Pawar said the school is planning an alumni weekend with boys and girls teams for the first week in November.

Sunday, the anniversary celebrations continued with an open house, held while the school was hosting the annual Brookswood car show and fundraiser outdoors on the playing field.

Indoors, the school was turned into an instant museum with 鈥淒ecade Rooms鈥 displays in classrooms featuring old-style fashions and technology going back as far back as the 1970s, along with photos of students back in the day, and other memorabilia.

Principal Lisa Ellis said two students from the very first class at Brookswood dropped by, and one brought her yearbook.

鈥淪he was sharing with other people, and they were reminiscing in the hallways, and as they wandered through these rooms, it was really fun to see,鈥 Ellis said.

There was a wall of fame devoted to successful grads, included barcodes that automatically linked smartphones to biographical details.

While technology and look of the school may have evolved over five decades, one thing has remained constant, Ellis observed.

鈥淲hat people say is the community feel hasn鈥檛 changed, and that鈥檚 really what鈥檚 special about Brookswood [that] people feel connected to the school as it鈥檚 a part of the community,鈥 Ellis told the 91原创 Advance Times.

Brookswood counts many notables among its graduates, including NHL hockey player Kyle Burroughs, professional basketball player Aislinn 鈥楢ce鈥 Konig, actor Amanda Crew, and musician Daniel Wesley, among others.
