Brookswood resident Jay Black was wearing his own Santa outfit when he walked out with his son, Griffin, to greet firefighters from firehall #5, who were collecting donations in his neighbourhood on Saturday, Dec. 16.
Usually, Jay explained, Griffin would also be in a Santa suit, but he had just come back from hockey practice and was a little tired.
鈥淲e like to get dressed up for Christmas and enjoy the festivities,鈥� Jay said.
鈥淲e always look forward to this part, where the fire department comes by and spreads some Christmas cheer, and we love it.鈥�
Firefighters, with Santa, handed out candy canes and collected non-perishable food items and cash donations for the Sources Food Bank. They were accompanied by Christmas music playing from the fire trucks, as it followed the merrymakers as they walked through the neighbourhood.
It was one of five Candy Cane Runs organized by the Township fire crews in different areas of town.
Brookswood firehall #5 firefighter Justin Albertson called the response 鈥渇antastic.鈥�
鈥淓veryone鈥檚 very welcoming,鈥� Albertson commented. 鈥淟ots of smiles, and Santa is doing a great job keeping the kids engaged. It鈥檚 great to get out and see the community.鈥�
The last of the five Candy Cane Runs is scheduled for Murrayville on Saturday, Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Zach Funk, a director of the Aldergrove-based that organizes the annual event, thanked residents for being 鈥渧ery generous and supporting us with providing some much-needed food for the food bank.鈥�
鈥淏ig thanks to our communities and our supporters once again for coming out and making it such a successful season.鈥�
