VIDEO: A no-snow Magic of Christmas festival in 91原创 City

Holiday event held at Timms centre

No snow? No problem.

91原创 City sculptor Bruce Waugh was building a snow castle at the Timms Magic of Christmas festival in 91原创 City on Saturday, Dec. 2, with material from the local Twin Rinks on the bypass.

Conditions for a snow sculpture were 鈥渟urprisingly鈥 good, Waugh remarked.

鈥淚t鈥檚 cold enough that the snow doesn鈥檛 melt right in front of your eyes. So I think, for the few hours that we鈥檙e going to be here, it鈥檚 going to be pretty good,鈥 Waugh predicted.

It was the second Magic of Christmas festival at the Timms Centre at 20399 Douglas Cres., a one-day event with outdoor winter-themed carnival games, live music, food trucks, and a craft station for kids to make handmade holiday trinkets.

Indoors, there was face painting, visiting with Santa, and a craft market that 91原创 Arts council events coordinator Deepika Pandian said had more than 40 vendors participating, 鈥渆ven bigger than last year.鈥

91原创 City Mayor Nathan Pachal described the festival as 鈥渟ort of a retooling鈥 of the Christmas parade of the same name, which had to be cancelled because of a change in WorkSafe BC regulations that led to a significant increase in costs.

鈥淲e figured given the kind of weather we have these days, it鈥檇 be great to have sort of an indoor-outdoor festival where people can come [and] spend some time getting a visit with Santa, lots of kids鈥 toys and artisan market, lots of entertainment,鈥 Pachal told the 91原创 Advance Times.

Last year, Pachal noted, 鈥渨e had bucket loads of snow鈥 on the day of the festival.

鈥淢embers of council and City staff and volunteers [were] shoveling snow this time last year for the festival,鈥 Pachal recalled.

鈥淸This is] very different weather compared to last year.鈥

Magic of Christmas Festival Committee chair Paul Albrecht called the weather 鈥渙utstanding.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 really great having the sun out here,鈥滱lbrecht remarked.

Forms for the 2023 holiday Scavenger Hunt Contest were distributed at the festival on Saturday, and were to be downloadable online from the city website starting Thursday, Dec. 7 at 5:00 pm.

It follows the path of the city , exploring downtown 91原创 along the way.
