VIDEO: A final 'Burnouts in the Sky'

12th and final year for fundraiser remembering Bradley McPherson

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, more than 200 cars, trucks and motorcycles filled the parking lot at George Preston rec centre with the sound of high-performance engines for the 12th and final Bradley McPherson Memorial Show and Shine fundraiser, all revving together to honour his memory.

"We went out on a high," said his mother, Susan Simning.

"A lot of good memories."

Among the vehicles at the event, also called Burnouts in the Sky, was Bradley's 鈥淓mma,鈥 a 1980 GMC short-box truck he used to do burnouts with.

McPherson, 28, was murdered on Christmas Eve day 2011 after he tried to intervene when a woman was being harassed at a party in a home in Newton.

His killer was convicted in 2018 and sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 15 years.

Money raised by the memorial shows has funded more than 20 scholarships for students with ADD or ADHD, or those wanting to pursue a career in auto repair.

Organizer Mariah Simning, Bradley's younger sister, said "emotional exhaustion" had taken its toll on the family.

"Ten years my mom did it and the past two years I've taken it over and I'm just really happy that we got to do 12 years of honouring my brother, and we get to do a scholarship every year to help kids with ADD and ADHD and I'm just so happy and so proud of us for doing it for so long" Mariah said.

Bradley's older sister Jennie McPherson said winding up the shows was "a little bit emotional but it's it's been great, we're happy that we've done so well."

Mom Susan penned an online tribute to her son, describing him as an "exhausting baby, wild child toddler, Tasmanian devil teen and the mostly loving, caring man with a heart of gold and a laugh that filled your soul with happiness."

"All his life he struggled with ADHD and that was a main focus for this fundraiser," Susan said, "a way to celebrate him and help youth in his memory."

The final Burnout raised $9,024, and a 50-50 draw raised $1,800, split with the winner.
