VIDEO: A 12-year-old woodworker completes more than 100 projects

Now 12, he started taking 91Ô´´ courses at 3

Dalton Luke needed red paint.

He was working on a piggy bank project for a DIY woodworking class at the 91Ô´´ Home Depot on Saturday morning, and that happens to be the 12-year-old's favourite colour.

But there wasn't any red at his table, so there was a delay until the right colour could be rustled up, and Dalton could set to work, applying paint with a smooth, practiced hand.

It was a special occasion, a milestone day for Dalton, a Port Kells resident who has made more than 100 projects at the monthly kids workshop sessions since he first took up his hobby in August of 2015.

"I just like woodworking," Dalton told the 91Ô´´ Advance Times.

Does he think he might make woodworking his profession when he's older?

"Maybe," he ventured, but right now, its mostly about having fun.

Every time Dalton completes a project, he gets a pin for his apron. At this point, his apron is heavy with pins that cover almost the entire front.

On Saturday, his accomplishment was celebrated with a special event that included cake, and an award.

Dalton thanked the organizers for making it a special occasion.

Dad Russ and mom Dori were on hand for the in-store event. Neither parent is a woodworker.

Russ, for instance, is more into metal, stock cars in particular.

"I work on cars a lot," he said.

Proud mom Dori was beaming.

"He's been coming here since he was three-and-a-half," she said.

"He's built us some trunks out of repurposed pallets," Dori added.

"He's a recycler."

A Home Depot Canada statement praised Dalton, saying he "has developed a keen interest in woodworking and has been inspired to continue this hobby."
