Kyro Plaviak is learning at a young age what it takes to make a change in the world. The 11-year-old, a long-time resident of Windsong Co-housing community in Walnut Grove, is one of a group of 13 students from Roots and Wings Montessori working tirelessly to prepare for a life-changing 10-day event in New York.Aged between nine and 14, the students will be delegates to the United Nations in New York. Their 10-day trip begins April 10 and includes a trip to the White House.Accompanied by three teachers, Kyro will join students from around the world in the annual Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) 鈥 a simulation of the UN General Assembly and multilateral bodies. By stepping into the shoes of ambassadors from UN member states, the students will experience what it is like to debate real world issues while navigating the Model UN conference rules. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity.鈥淭he next three months I know will be extremely tough, but when I finally reach the General Assembly at the UN, I will know that the topic I studied, every dollar I raised and all the time and effort I put into my work has led to this 鈥 my goal to help create a long-lasting peace-keeping mission for Zimbabwe,鈥 said Kyro.鈥淔or me, going to the UN is a huge opportunity, allowing me to sit in the place of an actual Zimbabwean ambassador and debate a current and real issue.鈥滻n an effort to contribute to the funds necessary as the group waits for various corporate sponsorship applications, Kyro has started his own free-range egg delivery business within his community of Windsong Co-Housing in 91原创 and his school at Roots and Wings Montessori School in South Surrey.鈥淚t鈥檚 a bit challenging at times,鈥 Kyro said, 鈥渆specially when orders change at the last minute or my customers don鈥檛 pay on time. It鈥檚 worth it though. I love serving my community and making my own money. It just feels good.鈥 The community shares his enthusiasm. 鈥淜yro is a great business man. I love that he goes the extra mile to ensure we have our eggs for Sunday morning breakfast,鈥 said Jessica Bustard, one of his Windsong customers. 鈥淗e is a great asset to the community, a mentor for the younger children with a compassionate, sincere heart. This trip will be an amazing experience for him.鈥滱 Montessori student for the past nine years, concepts such as earth stewardship, global awareness, ecological business practices and community awareness have become second nature to Kyro. 鈥淗e and his colleagues are passionate about the earth, they act responsibly, and resolve conflicts with peaceful, non-violent communication,鈥 said his mother, also a Montessori teacher at Roots and Wings. 鈥淲hat better opportunity to celebrate such wonderful gifts.鈥
