PHOTOS: Tree chipping surpasses Aldergrove grad goal

Bottle drive, tree chipping funds go towards dry grad party

There was a big pile of pine trees in front of D.W. Poppy Secondary ready to be shredded on Saturday, Jan. 4.

It was the first Christmas tree recycling event in Aldergrove, although there were many others in other parts of the 91Ô´´ Township that weekend, and raised $1,600.

Tyree Buchanan, treasurer of the PAC, explained the donations will go towards the dry grad fund to provide a fun graduation party for the 2025 graduates of D.W. Poppy.

She said they hoped to raise up to $1,000 from the event, but have surpassed that goal.

"We have a neat, local venue that will be more like going to a nightclub. A little bit different than we've done in past years so maybe it will appeal better for them [in a safe space]," she said.

Buchanan added that the venue has a bartender to provide mocktails, rather than parents trying "to figure out how to do it," she laughed.

People were donating $20 per tree, and she estimated they had up to 50 trees.

The PAC also was running a bottle drive the same day, where people could drop off their holiday cans and bottles to support the dry grad.

"We want to thank Arbor Pro Tree Services for donating their time [to chip trees], they're an amazing family that have supported us for years," Buchanan added.

Those who couldn't make it the day of the event can still donate their bottles to any local depot and use account number 604-530-5034 (the school's fax number). Donations can also be made via e-transfer to dwpoppydrygrad@gmail.com.

The PAC will be holding a car wash fundraiser at the school in spring, as well as running the concession for the rugby sevens tournament.
