Last year鈥檚 May Day Parade was a near wash due to stormy weather.

Today鈥檚 parade on Victoria Day 2017 was just the opposite.

Monday鈥檚 sunny skies and summer-like weather actually made for a high volume of sales in ice cream, hats, and cold beverages. It also meant a few overheated vehicles in the late morning parade. And, when talking to a few of the faithful event spectators, they noted a lower than normal attendance.

But all were unanimous. It was a perfect day for a parade.

Tanis Sullivan and her daughter have been coming out for the past six years.

鈥淓very year, we love it. It鈥檚 wonderful. It鈥檚 our community. We come out to support our community and all the people who are here,鈥 Sullivan said.

Mirian Slater has been a regular for the past 30 to 35 years, the past six of which she鈥檚 adorned a traffic safety vest and helped direct traffic.

This year, Slater was set up at Mary Avenue and Glover Road, and fortunately didn鈥檛 have much work to do 鈥 giving her lots of time to enjoy the parade.

Asked why she attends, the Fort 91原创 woman replied: 鈥淚t鈥檚 just fun. It鈥檚 the beginning of summer and everyone comes out in shorts and T-shirts and enjoys themselves. It鈥檚 a very pleasant community get together.鈥

Ralph Austin and his wife have lived in 91原创 for the past 15 years, and come out to this event every year.

鈥淲e come to Fort 91原创鈥檚 May Day Parade because it鈥檚 fun,鈥 Austin said. 鈥淲ith or without kids, it鈥檚 a lot of fun.鈥

While Alisa was a newcomer to the parade, her boyfriend Anthony was not. The duo were found outside the Planet Java 鈥50s cafe devouring ice cream, Anthony admitted to attending for years.

鈥淎s a kids, I would come here all the time and just my memory, it was a mad scramble for every candy, every single candy,鈥 he said, noting how it hasn鈥檛 changed much, but he鈥檚 no longer scrambling to scoop up the candies as they鈥檙e thrown into the crowd 鈥 at least not very often.

Then, he recounted one parade where Anthony thought he鈥檇 be rich.

鈥淥ne time, the Scotiabank threw Loonies out, and I鈥檝e never run faster in my life,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why I come. I just keep coming back for the candy and ice cream.鈥
