PHOTOS: 86 riders hit 91原创 streets to help the blind

Cycle for Sight attracted more participants than last year, raising close to $100K

Christina Henderson and her 16-member cycling posse biked hundreds of kilometres through the streets of 91原创 and raised thousands to fight blindness, all of that in just one morning.

鈥淭he event was amazing! The day was perfect from the weather to the riders and all the volunteers who continue to show up and support our fight to end blindness,鈥 Henderson said of the June 3 fundraiser based out of the West 91原创 Hall that attracted a total of 86 cyclists.

鈥淚t is so heartwarming to see everyone come on site with huge smiles on their faces and hearing them say how happy they are to be back. And all the first timers say that they can鈥檛 wait for next year,鈥 Christina shared after this year鈥檚 ride.

She and her team, the Hendo鈥檚 Heroes, have been cycling together for years. This year, they already raised more than $32,000 of their $40,000 goal, and Henderson pointed out there鈥檚 still time to collect more before the cutoff in mid-July.

So far, Hendo鈥檚 Heroes are the top fundraising team again for 2023, with Christina making it to the podium as top fundraiser of the B.C. event 鈥 which is expected to raise more than $100,000 in 2023.

鈥淲ords will never be able to express my gratitude towards everyone who supports me and my family and Fighting Blindness Canada,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 feel so lucky and blessed.鈥

Their children, 17-year-old Ava and 11-year-old Chase, were both diagnosed with Stargardt鈥檚 disease when they were six.

When Fighting Blindness Canada was searching for volunteers to help launch a new Cycle for Sight fundraiser on the West Coast in spring 2014, the Hendersons signed up as riders, and Christina took on co-chair duties. She became chair three years later, a title she still holds.

She was quick to clarify, though, that Cycle for Sight is a huge undertaking that relies on all the riders and volunteers to make it happen. Admittedly, many of those volunteers are family members and friends she鈥檚 coerced into helping through the years. She鈥檚 grateful for everyone鈥檚 participation.鈥

So to is Shannon Boudreau, the West Coast manager for Cycle for Sight.

鈥淭his year we had 86 riders, 14 more participants than last year. In addition, on site we had 30 volunteers and at least 40 other friends and family who came out to support, enjoy the beer gardens with live music, and cheer in the riders as they arrived back to site from their 30-, 60-, 90-, or 120-km rides.鈥

She noted that cyclist, and their family and friends in attendance, contributed generously to the fundraising goal by signing up for massages onsite by donation, participating in the wine pull, and purchasing raffle tickets.

鈥淲ith the success of this year and the picturesque cycle route through Fort 91原创 and the Township of 91原创, the planning committee is already looking forward to planning next year鈥檚 ride in 91原创 once again,鈥 Boudreau advised.

鈥淲e expect to see more growth in the years to come and would love to see more riders from 91原创 join our event.鈥
