More volunteers always needed for annual Aldergrove Fair

Anu Sharma is the new events coordinator for the Aldergrove Fair this year, her first time volunteering for the 112-year-old annual event, and she highly recommends others join too.

"I [joined] because of the youth program, in which the fair wants to give people experience on how to be involved in festival and community events," she explained.

Her first event she helped coordinate was Canada Day at the Aldergrove legion branch, which fair volunteers and the legion did in partnership.

"Out here in the community, you get to see friendly faces, people who have been involved for a long time 鈥 it's such a great tradition that's been passed on for years and years," the Abbotsford resident said.

As a university student, Sharma said this particular volunteer experience has been valuable already.

"The most experience I've had has been at university, but out here we get to do so much hands-on activities... and sharing my input."

The Aldergrove Fair is entirely run and organized by volunteers from Aldergrove, 91原创, and neighbouring communities.

Just enough volunteers stepped up in November to avoid the fair committee calling for a cancellation of this year鈥檚 event, however Aldergrove Fair volunteer coordinator Garth Blois says more are still needed.

鈥淲e had just enough volunteers last year, but we could use more,鈥 he said.

Right now, there simply aren鈥檛 enough people working on Aldergrove Fair Days, and those who are helping are overworked and burning out, said the new president Karen Long.

The fair currently has a full slate of nine volunteer directors, and a little more than 20 volunteers to handle advance planning.

But when it comes to the actual fair days, there are a dozen positions to be filled throughout the three-day fair to keep everything running.

For this year, Long and Blois are hoping for more volunteers to help cover the afternoon and evening shifts, which range from one to four hours at a time.

But Blois said they can be flexible with what works for the volunteers, anything will help.

Those interested in volunteering for the Aldergrove Fair can email volunteers@aldergrovefair.ca or fill out the form online at .

This year's fair will take place from July 19 to 21 at the Aldergrove Athletic Park with the theme 鈥渃ountry roots and cowboy boots.鈥
