A 91原创 City business owner wants to create a new car show for the City now that the Good Times Cruise-In is heading for Aldergrove.

Randy Caine, owner of Hempyz on Fraser Highway, is proposing a 91原创 City Show and Shine for the B.C. Day long weekend in August.

鈥淚鈥檓 not looking to try to compete, or replace the Cruise-In,鈥 Caine said.

He鈥檚 speaking to 91原创 City officials, to car clubs, and to other businesses about the possibility of creating a show as soon as this year.

It would be far smaller than the average of 1,500 cars that typically came to City streets for Crusie-In. Caine would like to see a show of about 300 cars, on Fraser Highway鈥檚 one-way segment from Glover Road to 206th Street, and on nearby Douglas Crescent and in Douglas Park.

Making it smaller and more family-oriented, with events for kids, food trucks, and entertainment would make it a different kind of experience from the Cruise-In, Caine said.

With its smaller scope, Caine hopes that eventually the City could take on the car show as a civic event, which would eliminate any conflicts between organizers and local officials in the future.

For now, he鈥檚 speaking to merchants and said so far he鈥檚 receiving positive feedback about the idea.

鈥淭he Cruise-In outgrew us,鈥 Caine said. A smaller event might be a better one for the City and its store owners, he said.

While he鈥檚 enjoyed going to car shows, Caine himself is not a classic car owner. He just wants to see a fun community event in the City.

The 91原创 Good Times Cruise-In is planning a move to Aldergrove this year, after a dispute with 91原创 City over who would pay for policing costs. The City wanted partial payment for policing costs on the Friday before the event 鈥 a night when there have, in the past, been some burnouts and drag racing as car buffs poured into town.

The Cruise-In organizers worried that the increase in costs would impact their ability to hand over money to the charities they support, and switched to 91原创 Township. The event is still planned for the Saturday after Labour Day.
