Brookswood Senior Centre anniversary attracted about 100 people to the recent celebration.

Brookswood Senior Centre is 50 years old.

The centre recently celebrated its half-century anniversary with a luncheon for more than a hundred.

Approximately 50 volunteers orchestrated the event, covering entertainment, decoration, baking, quilt-making for raffles, securing door prizes, setting up and tearing down tables and chairs, and providing lunch for more the packed house, explained coordinator Bonnie Hartup.

Entertainment included the Surrey Square Wheelers square dance group, Lydia Francescutti and her performing dog Rico, Gentle Fit drummers led by Lorie Naylor, and Spanish dancers Lorie and Anna in traditional costumes. Activities also included crafting greeting cards and dancing.

The Brookswood Senior Centre has been a key part the 91原创 community for five decades, when Alice and Alex Hood initially repurposed of an unused Mennonite church on 36 Avenue back in the 1970s for community use.

Event at the anniversary party highlighted the centre's role in fostering community support and celebration, Hartup explained.
