Local trainer demonstrates dog agility at Aldergrove Fair

Jessie Lawson has been a dog trainer for two years

Aldergrove dog trainer Jessie Lawson turned to dog agility after she was no longer able to work with horses.

"It keeps me physical, but I don't have to manage a one-thousand pound animal, and keeps that connection through working with animals," she shared.

One thing she quickly learned when she started training dogs, was that it is "wildly different" compared to horses.

"On a horse you have some physical control, whereas with dogs you work with them as a team and they are separate from you. So, you are learning to control them from a distance," Lawson said.

She said training dogs has been fun and rewarding.

"Having a dog as a pet is one thing, but being able to train them to work with you and have fun with you is so rewarding."

Lawson hosts classes at two different farms Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

People interested in signing up can email her at fourpoeticpaws@gmail.com.

"Any dog can do agility," Lawson said, adding though that it requires patience from the trainer.

"There's a lot more to it than pointing at the jump."

She said dog agility has been good for her physical and mental health, but also for her dogs as well.

Lawson brought her two dogs and an additional one she is training for someone else to the Aldergrove Fair to give agility demonstrations.
