Nicole Burt popped off the cookie tin lid as her young son, Henry, selected from among at least a dozen cloth and paper poppies to fasten onto the wreaths at the base of the 91原创 City cenotaph following Nov. 11 services.
The 91原创 City family had wanted to leave personalized poppies as their way of honouring Canada鈥檚 war dead and serving members. Burt explained that they home school and have recently been discussing Remembrance Day and the issues surrounding it. That included attending the Saturday services in Douglas Park.
鈥淲e just thought that it was important we go and attend,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 think it just helped connect the kids a bit more.鈥
They were among the many people, of all ages, who gathered for the traditional Nov. 11 services organized by the community with support from the Royal Canadian Legion Cloverdale branch.
Emcee Jim McGregor commented that the day is to honour those who fought for the freedoms Canadians currently including to 鈥渂e free, within the bounds of decency and law and order, a way of life each one of us may choose.鈥
Lauren West sang both O Canada and O God Our Help in Ages Past as well as leading the assembled in God Save the King. Rob Duff was the piper and trumpet player Hugh Penner did the Last Post and Rouse. RCMP Cpl. Julie Bion recited In Flanders Fields, and Pastor Derrick Hamre provided an invocation prayer, the Lord鈥檚 Prayer and scripture reading, and the benediction.
