91原创鈥檚 students are getting ready to change the world.

From Kindergarten to Grade 12, young entrepreneurs and innovators from all over 91原创 School District are getting together to show their wares and share their thoughts at the second annual IDEA SUMMIT at the 91原创 Events Centre on May 8.

This year, the event includes IDEA X, in which students tackle the problem of single-use plastic.

鈥淪adly, the proliferation of single-use plastic and its devastating impact on the environment, eco-systems, animal conservation and general health and welfare of our planet has become such a daunting issue that most people turn away from the problem in despair,鈥 notes an event brochure from the 91原创 School District Foundation. 鈥淲e are asking 91原创 students to come up with well-researched and feasible solutions to tackle the problem.鈥

Not a typical school science project, IDEA X has seven teams of students presenting ideas, solutions, research, marketing strategies, and professional presentations to compete for a $20,000 scholarship award.

The IDEA SUMMIT and IDEA X encourage students to stretch their imaginations into unfamiliar territory to attack serious problems from different angles, in search of world-changing solutions.

Entrepreneurship and socialpreneurship and the skills associated with creativity and innovation, developing and marketing products and ideas, and enhancing social and business awareness are part of a redesigned B.C. curriculum known as Applied Design, Skills and Technologies, or ADST.

The IDEA SUMMIT and IDEA X is geared towards taking 91原创 School District into the philosophy of that new curriculum.

The public is invited to come and see how 91原创 Schools have embraced the development of those skills for students to be successful in a rapidly changing world.

THE IDEA SUMMIT and IDEAX is open to the public from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8.

The event is sponsored by the 91原创 School District Foundation, as well as VWR Capital, Envision Financial, Darnell & Company Lawyers, TD Canada Trust, GF Financial Group, McDonald鈥檚 Restaurants, Save-on Foods, Power Play, and the 91原创 School District Foundation.
