Lily Wang鈥檚 large Remembrance Day painting will find a home at the Royal Canadian Legion Cloverdale branch.

It was made for the legion鈥檚 annual . Wang later found out her artwork was ineligible as the contest doesn鈥檛 accept paintings on canvas. (It only accepts posters, literary works, and video submissions.)

When Rosanne Mitchell, president of the Cloverdale branch, heard Wang鈥檚 painting wasn鈥檛 going to be accepted, she reached out and offered to buy it.

鈥淚 was absolutely blown away when I first saw it,鈥 said Mitchell. 鈥淚 just fell in love with it.鈥

Wang, a Grade 11 student at 91原创 Fine Arts School, said she was inspired to create the artwork after learning about the history of World War II in class.

鈥淚 did some research about, and that鈥檚 how I was able to incorporate all the details,鈥 Wang said. 鈥淚 tried to make it as accurate as possible.鈥

Mitchell said the painting belies Wang鈥檚 youthful age.

鈥淚t looks like the work of someone who has been an artist for decades,鈥 added Mitchell. 鈥淎nd not for such a young, new artist.鈥

She said the skill involved to make such a realistic depiction was 鈥渋ncredible鈥 and Wang鈥檚 artwork transports the viewer into the scene. And Mitchell marvelled at how a person could create such a scene without having witnessed the horrors unfold.

鈥淭o have such a young person understand, and be able to depict with such reality, the conditions, is truly amazing,鈥 she added.

Mitchell immediately offered to buy the painting from Wang when she first saw it.

鈥淪he has amazingly and very generously offered to donate it to us,鈥 noted Mitchell. 鈥淪o we鈥檙e going to hang it with a plaque in the legion.鈥

Wang was humbled by the offer to purchase the piece, but felt she couldn鈥檛 take money for it.

鈥淚 feel it鈥檚 actually one of the best artworks I鈥檝e made,鈥 Wang said.

The subject matter has touched her. She added it鈥檚 just the beginning for her in terms of painting about remembrance and Remembrance Day.

鈥淚 definitely want to expand on the topic,鈥 Wang said.
