Every year, there are more people who need help, says Kimz Angels founder Kim Snow.
"It's getting worse and worse and worse," Snow told the 91Ô´´ Advance Times.
This year, the 91Ô´´-based assistance agency will be holding four donation events in nine days.
"We're doing it more often," Snow commented.
"Fill the ambulance" will be accepting donations on two weekends – Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Focus West Logistics Ltd. at A180-9347 200A St. and the following weekend, Dec. 7 and 8, at the Murrayvile IGA store at 102 – 22259 48 Ave.
"When we started, this was not our intention to grow," Snow said. "It's just that the demand is unbelievable out there. People just don't have enough money to buy food, basically."
She estimated numbers are rising at the weekly Wednesday morning distribution at the 91Ô´´ Vineyard Church, with more than 200 lining up some mornings.
"It's not just homeless we're helping anymore, like 28 years ago. These are people that are going to work. They're doing their best," Snow said.
"People are saying, 'well, you know what, I work, I pay my rent, and I just can't afford to put gas in my car, or I can't afford to buy extra food for my kids,'" Snow recalled.
People are finding it harder and harder to keep up with the rising cost of living, Snow observed.
"Things have gone up so much that they're not able to go and buy tomatoes or cucumbers. Everything is a lot more expensive than it was, and their wages have not gone up."
Kimz Angels is looking for non-perishable food, "the pastas, the peanut butters, the tunas, the almonds, protein, granola bars," Snow said, as well as diapers, baby food, cash donations or gift cards.
"The demand is just unreal out there, and we can't really give up."
People who can’t make it to the donation events can make contributions by emailing info@kimzangels.com or by phoning 604-838-6579.
