Tears trickled down Miriam Senges鈥 cheeks in June, 2013, as she walked among a mass of yellow at McLeod Athletic Park.
Miriam wore a yellow shirt 鈥 like all the others who were survivors, or were still living with cancer.
Cancer that just won鈥檛 go away.
Cancer that鈥檚 threatened Miriam鈥檚 life on four separate occasions.
Last week, emotion washed over the 52-year-old married mom of three grown children.
Her voice shook as reflected on the Survivors鈥 Victory Lap that are the first steps taken during the .
And the tears came back again.
鈥淭he survivor鈥檚 lap is very emotional,鈥 Miriam said. 鈥淚 was diagnosed with kidney cancer and I hadn鈥檛 had my surgery, so I was walking it with the cancer. It was very hard, actually. But there鈥檚 such strength when it comes to walking the track with other people in yellow shirts, because they understand what you鈥檙e going through, right?鈥
As she walked the oval track that first year, Miriam held hands with her husband, Randy.
The two recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary, and Randy has been Mariam鈥檚 rock throughout her five-year ordeal that saw her survive breast, kidney, bladder, and lung cancer while undergoing 16 rounds of chemotherapy treatments.
鈥淲e walked by our tent, and just to see my people supporting you, cheering you on 鈥 it鈥檚 really an emotional event,鈥 a tearful Miriam said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very powerful.鈥
Friday June 9 will mark Miriam and her family and friends鈥 fifth , as the annual fundraiser for the takes place from 6 p.m. to midnight at the McLeod Athletic Park.
鈥淓very (Relay for Life fundraiser) is emotional,鈥 Miriam said. 鈥淎fter four cancers, it鈥檚 a lot. But I鈥檓 here.鈥
Miriam鈥檚 journey began 2010, the year she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
鈥淚 went through all the treatments, the chemo, the radiation; I was on a new drug called Herceptin,鈥 she recalled, of her breast cancer battle. 鈥淚t was almost a two-year process.鈥
At the time, she was very involved with the Canadian Cancer Society because she had lost her dad Gordon along with many others she knew and loved to the disease.
But things got worse before they got better, and three years later, in June 2013, Miriam was diagnosed with kidney cancer.
She underwent surgery to have her kidney removed, but still her outlook remained positive and Miriam continued to fight. Over the next two years, Miriam would be diagnosed with bladder and lung cancer, resulting in having her bladder and the upper lobe of her lung removed.
鈥淚鈥檓 running out of organs,鈥 Miriam said with a laugh.
There鈥檚 a duality to what Miriam has been through; she鈥檚 been haunted by cancer, but says every day is a blessing.
鈥淚鈥檓 a walking miracle, I know,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e all don鈥檛 know how many days we have. And so obviously, my time isn鈥檛 up. After I had my bladder surgery and adjusting to life with an ostomy bag was horrific. Because the cancer keeps reoccuring, and I have this ostomy bag that I have to look after, it鈥檚 constantly there.鈥
In 2013, after Miriam鈥檚 kidney cancer diagnosis, her daughter-in-law Alison suggested the family take part in 91原创鈥檚 Relay for Life.
鈥淪o that was the first year that we did relay,鈥 Miriam said.
Jump ahead to 2016, and it was a year of Miriam holding her breath. 鈥淚t seems like every spring, I鈥檝e been diagnosed with another cancer, so spring for me was really tough, having two cancer (diagnoses) in a row in April.鈥
While the past five years have been nothing short of horrible, Miriam said she鈥檚 thankful she鈥檚 still alive. 鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 for all the research, all the money that鈥檚 been raised through Relay, through the Canadian Cancer Society鈥, there鈥檚 been so much headway that I know I鈥檓 here because of all of that. Living in this country and getting the care we have is unreal.鈥
Miriam and Randy are leading Team Senges with their children Matt, 30, and Stephanie, 29, and Victoria, 23, along with Matt and Stephanie鈥檚 spouses, and all of their family and friends.
