Mackenzie and Delaney Carter spent many hours baking cupcakes 鈥 and ended up raising over $900 for disaster relief in Japan.

While many kids spent their spring break playing with friends, two 91原创 girls spent theirs labouring away in a kitchen 鈥 mixing, baking and decorating cupcakes to raise money for disaster relief in Japan.

Mackenzie and Delaney Carter, ages 13 and 15, were baking all day on Thursday, March 24, and well into the wee hours of the morning, to prepare 180 cupcakes for sale the next afternoon.

Mackenzie, a Grade 7 student at 91原创 Meadows Community School, did a speech in class on Japan and became inspired to do something to help with relief efforts. After flipping through a cupcake magazine and begging her mother to make up a batch, she decided to piece the two together.

鈥淚 found out how horrible it was and I just really wanted to help,鈥 she said of the natural disaster in Japan.

Her older sister Delaney also jumped on board right away.

鈥淚 felt like if I were in this position, I would want people to help me too. So we just decided to do something to help,鈥 she said.

After pre-selling 12 dozen cupcakes, the girls set up a small table outside of 91原创 Meadows, with the goal of raising $200.

In only an hour and a half they had already sold out of cupcakes. They had planned to stay there for four hours.

鈥淲e had such a good response from the community, it was overwhelming,鈥 said Tracy Carter, the girls鈥 mother.

But it didn鈥檛 stop there. After the sale was over, Tracy received more e-mails and phone calls from people asking if they could put in late orders. The girls ended up baking for the rest of the weekend.

Seventeen hours of kitchen labour later, 220 cupcakes in eight different flavours were sold, raising $460 鈥 far exceeding their original goal.

All of the money raised in the sale was donated to the Red Cross for Japan relief, and is being matched by Social Shopper.com. That makes for a grand total of $920.

Tracy says she is very proud of her daughters and their independence throughout the whole process.

鈥淚 was like good for you, I support you in this,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 had my moments where I was thinking 鈥榦h shoot,鈥 but it's turned out really great.鈥

After their surprising success, they are thinking of making their 鈥渃upcakes for a cause鈥 an annual fundraiser for a different charity each year.
