CANADA DAY: 91原创 neighbours host flag war

Round 2 in a friendly and patriotic competition underway in Fernridge

Three families in 91原创鈥檚 Fernridge Park are engaged in a little friendly competition.

The three patriotic homeowners are competing to see whose property displays Canada鈥檚 flag best.

Two years ago, the competition began with two neighbours debating over whose flag flew the best and last year a third neighbour entered the fray.

The Rotary Satellite Club is offering to assist in spreading this competition further 鈥 to others in the neighbourhood, and even community wide, for that matter.

Six years ago, the Rotary Satellite Club of 91原创 Central Sunset launched its annual 鈥楩lag Project,鈥 which raises funds for the newest 91原创 Rotary Club.

To help 91原创 residents show their Canadian pride this summer 鈥 while supporting Rotary service projects and other local charitable events for community projects 鈥 the Rotary Club is once again hosting the Flag Project.

For a fee of $50, a full-size Canadian flag will be placed on a person鈥檚 property for three statutory holiday weekends this summer: Canada Day, B.C. Day, and Labour Day.

As for this growing competition in Fernridge, at first there was only one flag in the neighbourhood and three years ago another flag appeared.

Last year, resident Pat McIntosh proudly placed her flag at the end of her home鈥檚 driveway.

鈥淢y driveway has the better wind currents,鈥 she said. That鈥檚 why my flag took first-place last year, and I think I have a good chance to win again this year,鈥 she said with a smile.

鈥淪he put us all to shame,鈥 said neighbour Lilianne Fuller. 鈥淥ur flag never did get the proper amount of 鈥榓ir鈥 so this year, I鈥檓 going to change it up,鈥 explained Della Clifford.

Except for sharing with the Rotarians coming to place the flag, Clifford has not disclosed the location where hers will be placed this year. But, she is convinced that it is her turn to win.

鈥淭he strategy is in place, trees are trimmed to increase the wind flow,鈥 she said with a mischievous smile.

Originally a fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Oak Bay, this is the fifth year the club in 91原创 carried out the project. While the club is less focused on fundraising, the funds collected help local community initiatives through the purchase of materials, supplies, and other expenses.

鈥淥ur satellite club is hands-on here in 91原创. Fundraisers like the flag project provide us with the funds we need to help out those who may need a hand and demonstrate our commitment to 鈥楽ervice Above Self鈥,鈥 explained Fuller, who is the club鈥檚 public relations director.

Recently, the small but growing club completed an outdoor classroom at Glenwood Elementary as one of its major projects. In addition, the club recently refreshed and replanted the garden at the 91原创 Youth Hub.

Members of the club were also on hand to help with the successful inaugural Hoop-A-Thon held at the Aldergrove Community School.

Many more service projects are in the works, said Addison Pasiuk, club chair.

鈥淲e recognize a problem in that charities are constantly faced with balancing sustainability for future years with their need for fundraising. Our club service funds are paired with at-event volunteer efforts to help minimize the charity鈥檚 overhead in order to maximize the financial impact for the charity鈥檚 cause,鈥 Pasiuk said.

The Rotary club are encouraging more neighbourhoods to take part in a friendly Canada flag competition of their own.

鈥淚f you鈥檇 like to have a little competition in your neighbourhood, we鈥檒l be happy to send out one of our members to plant your flag and judge your efforts,鈥 Fuller said with a grin. 鈥淚f you want to participate, it isn鈥檛 too late. There is still time to sign up for the last two long weekends of the summer.鈥
