Fire up the grill! It鈥檚 time once more for the annual BBQ on the Bypass.
On Sunday, Sept. 18, 30 teams will gather at 20771 91原创 Bypass for the sixth annual outdoor cooking contest.
This year, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with more than 100 competitors expected to take part and thousands of people sampling their efforts in the categories of chicken, ribs, beef brisket and pork butt and a chef鈥檚 choice category.
New this year is the JD Farms Ultimate Burger Challenge, a competition which will rate and rank teams on their outstanding hamburger creations.
This year also marks the return of the Great B.C. Bake Off, a popular amateur pie and tart baking competition which is open to the public. In addition, the event will feature an expanded concession area, marketplace, and a children鈥檚 area hosted by The Great Escape.
Competitors include last year鈥檚 reigning champions, Brian and Corrine Misko from House of Q, in addition to teams from throughout Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. The BBQ on the Bypass house band, OS5 will perform throughout the day, along with special guest, country music artist, Karen Lee Batten.
The event will also feature a marketplace with sponsor displays, activities, prizes; plus concessions and barbecue food samples provided by the teams.
The team with the most points will be crowned the BBQ on the Bypass Grand Champion and will win up to $5,000 in cash prizes. The BBQ on the Bypass is also the site of the B.C. barbecue championship and the last competition in a series where the team with the most points in all five provincial competitions will be crowned the B.C. barbecue champion, earning the David Valjasic Cup.
Approximately 30 teams are expected to compete at this year鈥檚 event including House of Q and Rub My Butt from Surrey; Mad Cow, Porkaholics and Helluva Q from 91原创; Whistler鈥檚 BBQ Bob & the Eh Team; and Lynn Valley Butts, Smoke N Bones BBQ and Bad Ass BBQ from North Vancouver and many more. The Well Seasoned BBQ On The Bypass is a not-for-profit event, designed to introduce more people to 鈥渞eal barbecue鈥 while providing competitive teams with an opportunity to hone their skills.
As an internationally sanctioned cook-off, the event brings world class competitive teams from across Western Canada and the U.S. to 91原创 for Greater Vancouver鈥檚 largest barbecue competition. Teams will start cooking at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17 and turn in their entries to be judged every hour on the hour after 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18.
The winners will be announced at approximately 5 p.m.
