Aldergrove family's tournament raises almost $10k for cancer fight

Mangat family held its fourth annual softball tournament on Aug. 24 and 25

Although the first day of the softball tournament was delayed due to heavy rainfalls overnight that carried into Saturday morning, Aug. 24, the Mangat family went ahead with the event at 1 p.m. when the sun came out.

"We had to rent pumps and pump the water out [of the fields]," Jodi Mangat said, mom of the family.

It was the fourth annual fundraising tournament where proceeds are donated to a local family battling childhood cancer.

While the goal wasn't reached, oldest son Justin Mangat said they are pleased with "a great turnout" and raising just shy of $10,000, including a donation from the Aldergrove Elks.

"We really want to highlight our sponsors and volunteers this year. A few of them stepped up in a big way, especially Phoenix Tent Rentals who provided us with over $5,000 worth of rentals. This was so helpful, especially with the inclement weather," Justin said.

This year the family also held an inaugural outdoor music concert to wrap up the first day of the tournament.

"The Aldergrove Outdoor Concert is our way of bringing something new and exciting to our community," son Aman Mangat said.

"We've always been passionate about music and wanted to create an event that, not only celebrates this love, but also unites us in our support for local families affected by childhood cancer."

The family is hopeful the concert will return next year as another annual tradition.
