Imagine that you are a VIP from out of town who has business in the 91原创 area - a famous actor or a captain of industry who flies into Vancouver International Airport then takes a helicopter for a time-saving trip to the .

If you happen to arrive at the wrong time, your wait for a taxi or limo will be spent at one of two outdoor picnic tables.

One has slightly more shade than the other.

That鈥檚 because when the 900 sq-ft airport administration offices located on the second floor above Adrian鈥檚 At The Airport Restaurant are closed and the restaurant itself is shut down, there really isn鈥檛 an alternative.

鈥淭hey鈥檒l drop their helicopter there and they鈥檒l have to wait,鈥� Carol Madill, 91原创 Airport operations manager said Tuesday.

That will change as a result of the construction project now underway between the building that houses the popular restaurant at the airport and the NAV Canada air traffic control tower in the 5300 hundred block of 216 Street.

A sign officially announcing the new project went up Tuesday morning.

The $10 million 55,000 sq-ft building, expected to be completed by the spring of 2018, will house a state-of-the-art three-storey terminal building with a new airport control tower standing another two storeys above it.

It will offer visitors an indoor place to stay, but it is about a lot more than that, airport manager Guy Miller said.

Miller called it a 鈥減remier project鈥� and a 鈥渟ignificant upgrade鈥� that will replace the aging structure that currently houses air traffic control. It will provide a new home to Adrian鈥檚 and add much-needed meeting and briefing space for airport administration.

鈥淲e need a bigger flight planning centre for air crews to come in,鈥� Miller said.

鈥淲e routinely brief large swaths of pilots, where we have 40 to 100 pilots at a time.鈥�

The building is unique in that it combines several functions, a move that helps keep overall costs down, Miller said.

It is also a necessary improvement, given the increased activity at the airport.

鈥淲e have been getting an increase in helicopter traffic and we need to grow with the growth we鈥檙e experiencing,鈥� Miller said.

Not far from the terminal construction site, the new 150-employee Vector aerospace helicopter maintenance facility is nearing completion, Miller noted.

鈥淲e have a number of other companies that have been growing dramatically,鈥� he added.

The new terminal building will increase the space for airport administration from the current 900 square feet to about 2,000, and will house Adrian鈥檚 on the second floor, with an outdoor balcony dining area.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a good size.鈥� said Ron Madsen, the president of RDM Enterprises Group, the company building the new facility.

An RDM division, Pacific Aircraft Services, will own the building and lease it out.

鈥淚 think this is big for the film industry,鈥� said Madsen, who predicted the new building will make 91原创 that much more popular as a place for 91原创-bound actors to fly into.

Madsen is also handling other projects at the airport including doubling the .

Originally built by the federal Department of Transport in 1938, the 91原创 airport was controlled by the Department of National Defence and enhanced for the Royal Canadian Air Force for use as a relief field in the early 1940s.

After the Second World War, the Department of Transport resumed ownership and leased the airport to the Township of 91原创. In 1954, the facility was licensed to operate as a municipal airport and in 1967 it was purchased by the Township for $24,300.

Welcoming around 100,000 rotary and fixed-wing traffic movements per year, YNJ is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country. The airport is home to dozens of aviation businesses, providing everything from chartered helicopter and fixed-wing flights to aerospace innovation, parts manufacturing, and maintenance.
