A local agriculture company has found itself in some fairly elite company.
Green Scene AgriTek, which got its start in 91原创, has reached the third round of the 11th annual BCIC-New Ventures Competition, one of North America鈥檚 largest technology business idea competitions.
On Aug. 31, the top 10 contestants of the current 25 will advance to the final round, earning the opportunity to pitch their business to a panel of experts for a chance at a share of more than $360,000 in prizes.
Green Scene AgriTek cleans up used horse bedding with a new technology that reclaims the bedding鈥檚 wood component so that it can be reused as eco-friendly bedding, free from pathogens, mold spores and odours.
It is the first processing system of its kind in North America. Horse farms, equestrian centres and racetracks have limited disposal options for their used horse bedding, and a shortage of good bedding material available.
Their system can recycle and reuse the used bedding over 35 times to reduce costs by 33 per cent. In addition to aiding the equestrian industry, this process helps the environment and improves sustainability.
91原创鈥檚 Phil Wilford, the president and founder of GreenScene, has more than 15 years experience developing sustainable solutions to the environmental challenges facing the agricultural industry.
His experiences as owner of Jentek Environmental industries includes building and managing soil remediation systems for various world markets, developing a remediation system for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in an effort to combat Avian flu in 2004.
He founded GreenScene in 2007 to confront the growing problem of excessive waste in the equestrian industry.
BCIC develops entrepreneurial talent and commercializes technology through startup companies and partnerships between industry and academia.
It focuses on competitively positioning British Columbia in today鈥檚 global knowledge economy in order to provide significant employment opportunities and a high standard of living for British Columbians.
The BCIC-New Ventures Competition is one of North America鈥檚 largest technology business idea competitions.
The competition attracts applicants from cleantech, digital media, Internet, information technology and life sciences areas, all competing for five cash prizes.

Added to the mix of prizes to be won this year are the $15,000 Vancity Social Venture prize and two prizes for agricultural technologies, valued at $30,000 and $20,000.
