'Added bonus' helping families find perfect tree

Christmas tree farm owner Doug McFee says that his farm is more than just about choosing your tree. It鈥檚 an occasion for a family outing.

鈥淚f you are in a hurry and just want to choose one of our Douglas, Fraser or Noble firs we will help you cut it down and put it on

your vehicle. But if you have the time you can use one of our saws to cut down your own tree and then join us around the campfire for free hot chocolate, marshmallows, hot dogs and S鈥檓ores.鈥

There are also candy canes for the children,鈥 added McFee, whose farm provides free boughs for decoration and a baler to package trees for transport home.

An added attraction to the farm is the Salmon River, one of B.C.鈥檚 most productive coho streams, which runs through the back of the property.

鈥淎 gentle walk down to the river may allow you to see spawning coho as we had the pleasure of seeing one weekend in December last year,鈥 he said.

McFee, who is a long-time director of the Salmon River Enhancement Society, said that it was the river that was the most compelling reason for him to buy the property.

鈥淲orking the tree farm and enjoying Christmas with people happy to find their perfect tree has been an added bonus.鈥

He has brought to the farm the SRES鈥 Salmon Roulette Wheel which children can spin to see if they would have survived from an egg to a spawning coho.

鈥淜ids and adults alike love the game,鈥 he said.

is just off 248 Street at 24458 50 Ave. The farm is open on Friday afternoons and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to dusk.
